Doors in traditional houses

The great thing about Urban Front doors is that they fit with many different types of houses. Very traditional to ultra contemporary, our doors adapt and can be accessoried to work nearly anywhere.

We've chosen a few traditional houses ranging from Oak framed to red brick 1970's to show you what is possible. Scroll down to see images and read more.

Contemporary Bari front door framed by traditional oak porch

The homeowner chose a contemporary Bari oak front door with large silver handle to create the wow factor for this traditional home. Framing the Bari is an impressive large oak porch and windows clad in oak-look aluminium frames. The tones of the three elements work beautifully together and provide the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary styles. The internal side of the door is a simple Raw design in oak to complement the oak flooring, internal doors and white walls. The wooden staircase is set against a feature stone wall.

Iroko door on a traditional home creates a contemporary twist

This impressive Buckinghamshire home has undergone a major renovation including the addition of a stunning covered balcony featuring a pitched oak roof, which works perfectly with the front door – a beautiful dual Rondo V in iroko measuring 2.1m by 1.2m. The building work was undertaken by Martin Sirett of Sirett Builders. The matte black option 8 handle features inside and out adding a simple contemporary feel.

To allow light to flood into the house, the Rondo V front door has two clear glass side lights, which are flanked by floor to ceiling windows. The shape and design of the oak porch echoes the larger structure of the balcony.

Meanwhile, inside, the hallway features a classic oak floor by Northampton Wood Flooring Ltd and soft blue and grey tones, which complement the internal side of the door created in a contemporary silver-grey RAL (feldspar silver 180 70 05). The beams are by Hatfield Oak and the windows by Crown Conservatories Bletchley. Interior designer Pia Pelkonen worked her magic on the property’s interior to create a beautiful home.

Oak door in a traditional bungalow

This traditional bungalow was completely extended and renovated by its owners to improve the flow and living space for their growing family. The client wanted the front door to have a contemporary feel but fit in with the house. It had to be big - in this case 1.5m x 2.1m) and it had to have a black frame. On the inside the door needed to work with a more contemporary feel, so we suggested a white wash oil on the oak and to keep the frame black.

The large knob handle by www.phillipwattsdesign.com was also added to work with the traditional feel.

North London classic: grey Root front door in a traditional house

Our client came to us with a very specific request to make a door that was our door but in a more traditional style. So, we designed the form door which has a different design on the front and back and includes stainless steel as well. We've used a Georgian inspiration but kept the door as simple as possible.

The door is stained Urban Grey on European Oak and has a very large handle by Phillip Watts Design.

Black Numero door on a traditional house

It is always a struggle to update a more traditional house but you'd be surprised how easy it is to do so with a contemporary black door like the Numero. The Numero allows you to have your house number on your door in a functional and fun way. Even on a black door like this one, you can still see the number clearly.  In this case, the black brings out the darker colours of the brick and softens the white windows and therefore updates the building giving it a more contemporary feel.  We also think the black looks stunning internally with that amazingly large mirror.

The Numero is shown with a black RAL finish with an Option 14 pull and two side lites in sandblasted glass.

Iroko door on a traditional oak framed house

This house is a perfect 'how to' for merging both traditional and contemporary style.  All of us at Urban Front loved the mix of traditional oak frame with the sharp Iroko Rondo V pivot doorset.  Choosing Iroko instead of European Oak clearly elevates the doorset and defines it as the main entrance. Using a reddish warm wood like Iroko instead of a more yellowy oak is a pretty clever way to add warmth and mix hardwoods well.

Bringing it all together is the stunning bronze pull leaf motif handle - another way to bridge contemporary and traditional; bronze is a strong material which works well in both genres and in the right style is classy and an effective style statement.

"Just wanted to say how very pleased we are with our new Urban front door. What a stunner, suits the house beautifully to our eyes. May I also say the mechanism that locates the pivot door at the top is a thing of wonder & the light key turn & door thumb release make the door a joy to use. The whole thing is beautifully packaged & presented too a real credit to you."
