Doors in award winning houses

1. Kebony Houses: Porto front door in a beautiful beach setting

Ever since we received these pictures, we’ve all been dreaming of living by the sea. This house creates new meaning to sinking your feet in the sand! Stuart Martin, of Walker and Martin Architects, tells us all about these great buildings and how they came about.

The site is on the beach at Camber Sands with the sea to front and sand dunes to the rear. It is a beautiful but sometimes harsh location. The house design was required to be both flood resilient and resistant whilst sitting comfortably alongside existing beach houses and the natural backdrop of the dunes and sea. The main structure is formed from an ICF construction system with an engineered timber upper deck and roof structure. The entire structure was heavily insulated and clad with Kebony timber. The effect of wrapping the entire building in same material visually strengthens the simple form. As the natural material weathers it will become part of the landscape and topography of the beach. Of course the front door is also wrapped in Kebony and becomes the portal to a timber lined hallway, completed with the cladding repeated on the inner face of the door."

2. Caring Wood: bespoke doors for an award winning house

It's obvious that a house that has won RIBA House of the Year 2017  is going to be special, but even that doesn't prepare you for the sheer glory of Caring Wood.  CLT built and gracefully designed, this house is mighty in every way.

Urban Front supplied 7 doors in total to this house - some were used in the internal courtyard and some are hidden in the chestnut cladding on parts of the house. The work we did with the architects involved a lot of detail ensuring the doors would not stand out too much, and specifically centred around the front door which had stand out elements on the face of the door.

We love the lighting around the entrance and the fact that the door fits in very well with the particularly Scandinavian look of the interiors. A lovely country home to be enjoyed by many generations.

Doors used on this house were all bespoke E98 Passive Doors in Chestnut to match the cladding.

Architects: Macdonald Wright Architects http://macdonaldwright.com/?portfolio=caring-wood

Caring Wood is a country home for three generations of the same family, incorporating formal, communal and private spaces. Set in 84 acres its brief was to embody the spirit of the English country house and estate in a design which would embrace its context and landscape, while providing a carbon neutral response to climate change. The project was subject to a rigorous planning process to achieve consent under PPS7

3. House 19: Terano front door with canopy in a RIBA award winning house

This wonderful house by architect Heinz Richardson of JESTICO + WHILES won a RIBA South Award.

House 19 is a two storey home within a suburban area in an old town in Buckinghamshire with fairly ordinary looking homes surrounding it.  We were first approached by the architect on the project who was very particular about the door he wanted to use.

A lovely opportunity to highlight a doorway within a beautifully detailed corten canopy and stunning flint work. The rest of the building includes burnt cedar cladding --the ancient Japanese art of burning timber to provide a beautiful and long lasting product - and black windows. The front elevation hides a fabulous inner courtyard and a very well lit house which is very white in contrast to the exterior.

The door chosen was a Terano E80 in an oak stained in a very particular black/grey. The mixture of stainless steel and corten accessories work together to make this door look quite special.
