Going Passive doesn't mean that your doors have to be boring. Yes, you are restricted by size and a few other small design details, but you are definitely not restricted by design.

“Shingle house” with passive oak front door
This spectacular self-build came about after our client had initially had difficulty finding a property they liked that had a big enough garden. And so they were left with a new determination to build their own unique space instead. With a plot in place and plans drawn, the build commenced and the special shingle-clad exterior came to life.
A Passivhaus build needs a Passive door and we were delighted to lend our expertise to helping them create the perfect bespoke door. Although initially the client wanted a metallic finish, in the end they opted to go with our beautiful natural oak hardwood which perfectly complements the “back-to-nature” aesthetic of the building and surroundings.
They did still manage to incorporate a metallic element though, with corten steel side panels adding extra texture and interest to the entrance way (alongside those fabulous planters!).

It's not every day that you get to work on such an exciting project as this one. Designed by Adrian James Architects this project is curvy and exciting and especially so because it is Passive. We supplied 5 external doors to this project - two are visible here in the images. All the external doors are in Iroko oiled Porto E98 to keep the natural colour and to help darken over time.
An especially exciting part of this project was our bespoke pet flap which was fitted for a small dog and is passive haus certified, automatic opening and locking and invisible from the outside.
This Black beauty is one of my favourite projects from 2018 and it also featured in London Open Houses last September. What you can't tell from these images is that it is a certified Passive Haus - the leading international low energy design standard.
Jonathon Pile, the architect on this project, was very keen to match the door to the outer shell and be able to have it Passive Haus certified as well. The front door doesn't actually sit on the same elevation and is set back but looking from the outside you can see the front door when the main gate is open and it does line through with the cladding.
The Porto e98 Passive Haus certified doorset has a triple glazed side lite and is painted a black RAL colour. We particularly like how the black stands out with the other timbers used internally and blends in so well on the outside.
