Marry your porch with the perfect door

So, you’ve chosen a traditional porch for your home, and not only does it look great, but it's welcoming and practical too. Here are five top tips for selecting the best door to complement your porch and home.

Go large
If you have the space, don’t shy away from choosing a big, tall door it will be a guaranteed showstopper! Even if you don't have the extra height, a wide door is a great option too, as it will create impact and elevate the entrance. If space is limited, consider having solid wood panels on one side of the door to create a larger and more impressive look. If you do have the width and the height, go for it and have the biggest door you can. We definitely believe bigger is better, and Urban Front front doors can be made in bespoke sizes up to 1.5m wide x 3m tall.

Mix woods
We are big fans of mixing woods. Iroko and oak work beautifully together, and an iroko door with an oak frame is a popular choice. Remember to consider how the porch will look in the future. It may have yellowy tones when new, but it will probably end up going grey unless you treat it. The good news is, iroko looks great with oak regardless. The same applies to fumed oak, a dark wood.

Colour your way
If you just don’t want to mix woods or feel that a pop of colour might work better, then you could go with a RAL colour to suit the overall feel of the house or match the colour of the porch frame with the door. Muted greens and soft blues always work a treat, but really any colour would work, and it’s not necessary to match to your windows (unless you want to).

Go bold on the door furniture
Think black handles, an oversized central knob in bronze or stainless steel, or a sleek concealed handle. A contemporary handle adds interest and personality, and works well for a traditional home, especially if other parts of your house, such as a kitchen, will be modern in design.

Consider alternative materials
Bronze doors are a huge trend for 2026 and work well with a traditional vibe because bronze is a classic material and has a long-lasting feel. In the same way, the reclaimed pine that we use on our Barn doors also offers a traditional feel and would suit a greying oak frame very well.
